• Above-the-knee shorts
• Socks, preferably knee-high
• Dance shoes (ghillies (highland dance shoes) or black dance slippers for new dancers)
Premier dancers
• Bodysuit or fitted tanktop (girls)
• Non-baggy t-shirt (boys)
• Above-the-knee shorts
• Knee-high socks
• Ghillies
In general, dancers should wear fitted clothing so they can move well and the teachers can see how dancers are moving. Long hair should be tied back.
The ‘Links and Resources’ section of our website includes a list of online vendors that sell dance shoes and performance attire. Vendors often attend competitions, as well, so that you can try dance shoes on your dancer before purchasing. Please speak with your teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Member Volunteer Requirements
BHDA hosts three main events throughout the year (local competition in October, Robbie Burns Ceilidh in January, and Tartan Tea in May,) and all hands are needed for these events to be successful. Member families are required to volunteer in some capacity at each event, or pay $100 for each event at which you are not able to fulfil this requirement.
For new families, one undated cheque for $100 made out to BHDA is due on the first day of lessons, and will only be cashed if a volunteer requirement is not fulfilled. For returning families, last year's cheque will be held for the coming year, so no new cheque is required.
Communication
All BHDA news and information is posted on this website - please make a habit of checking it regularly.
Email is our main form of communicating with members. All BHDA information will come from battlefordshighland@gmail.com. Please add that email address to your safe list to ensure our emails do not end up in your junk mail folder. A test email will be sent to the email address(es) on your dancer’s registration form, asking for a reply to confirm you have received the email.
Competitions
Once they have learned basic steps, dancers are encouraged to take part in competitions. Benefits of competing include developing confidence, working towards a goal, and meeting other highland dancers from around Saskatchewan. Competition dates and registration forms will be posted on www.battlefordshighland.ca.
Competitive dancers must register with ScotDance Saskatchewan annually. Visit http://www.battlefordshighland.ca/resources-and-links.html for a link to the 2019 form and more information.
Local Performances (Dance-outs)
BHDA often performs at community events or at long-term care facilities as a way of sharing our love of Scottish culture and offering our dancers opportunities to share their talents.
You will be notified of upcoming dance-outs by email (battlefordshighland@gmail.com) and asked to confirm your participation to the dance-out coordinator. All dancers are asked to take part in at least one dance-out (in addition to the Robbie Burns dress rehearsal in January) throughout the year. The better the participation, the more fun it is for our dancers and greater exposure it is for our Association!

Calendar will be circulated in September.
